Why the mind that shaped our world now limits us.
Tell me when it's outThe unease
Most people carry a low-grade unease they can't account for. It doesn't come from anything in particular, and it doesn't lift when things go well. We treat it as stress, or personality, or the cost of a busy life.
This book reads it as information. The unease is the sound of an intelligence that began installing in us and stopped part way. What we run on instead is a mind built to sort, decide and hold the line, which is superb on problems with one right answer and unable to hold the ones that matter most.
About the book
Cognitive Unease is the first book in the trilogy, and it lays the foundations. It describes the cognitive system we default to, why it produces the particular flavour of disquiet so many people recognise, and how that system shapes everything from a stuck decision to a culture that keeps failing in the same way.
It draws on two decades of running processes with groups, in corporate, community and institutional settings, where people reliably reach a quality of thinking the default system can't produce. That access is real, and it's structural. This book is an account of the structure.
It offers no techniques. The unease has been managed and medicated and motivated away for long enough. Naming what it is comes first.
What you'll find
- An account of the mind that built the modern world, and the problems it can no longer hold.
- Why anxiety at this scale is a signal rather than a fault.
- How binary sorting shows up in meetings, decisions, relationships and whole organisations.
- What becomes available once you can see the system you're running on.
The trilogy
Cognitive Unease is the first of three, followed by Relational Intelligence and Only Human. Book two takes up the capacity we reach for and rarely name. Book three asks what it means to live this, together.
